The Commission...
During the mid 1990s, Pi Alpha Omega Chapter was commissioned by Alpha Kappa Alpha’s 13th South Atlantic Regional Director, Lucretia Payton-Stewart, to explore the possibility of expanding Alpha Kappa Alpha’s reach through the establishment of an undergraduate chapter at then Clayton College & State University.
Laying the Foundation...
Continuing these efforts throughout the start of the new millennium under the leadership of President, Patricianne Hurd, Pi Alpha Omega established a relationship with appropriate university officials, educating key university stakeholders about Alpha Kappa Alpha’s purpose and deeds, and familiarized itself with the needs of the surrounding community. At this time, enough interest was generated among some of the young campus women of high moral and ethical standards to begin initiating new general members under the guidance of Pi Alpha Omega and the approval of the 14th South Atlantic Regional Director, Sonja Garcia. From 2001 – 2004, the following 16 young women were inducted as general members.
Chartering New Ground...
With general members on campus, Pi Alpha Omega Chapter mentored the young undergraduates in partnering with other campus and community organizations to begin implementing programs of service that reflected the Alpha Kappa Alpha international program targets. Some of the local programs included breast cancer and black history awareness campaigns, clothing and toy drives, teen mentoring program, spoken word and alcohol awareness social events, AIDS awareness seminar and AIDS walk, and care package distribution to our troops in Iraq.
As the benefit of these efforts became evident to the campus community and benefiting community organizations, the interest in membership increased amongst the university's young women of high moral and ethical standards. Sigma Sigma was chartered on April 24, 2005.
The current chapter, under the leadership of President, Nykia Lewis, continues to be guided by Pi Alpha Omega Chapter, and graduate advisor Michelle Arrington. |
